Who is the Canadian Dance Assembly?

The Canadian Dance Assembly is the national service organization that represents professional dance in Canada.

For a number of years, dance was the only arts discipline in Canada without a broad-based national arts service organization. This led to challenges stemming from a lack of national representation, communication and coordination. At the request of the dance community, the Canadian Dance Assembly was established in 2002 to address those needs. The CDA functions using a membership model that includes all dance professionals and organizations, working in diverse forms and aesthetics.

Our primary purpose is to connect our members all across the country to address issues of importance to the dance community. We are a catalyst for action that promotes greater visibility for dance in the public and political eye.

We are the national voice for Canadian professional dance.

Our membership includes professionals and organizations working in diverse areas of dance including independent artists, educators, writers, researchers, consultants, presenters, companies, service organizations and training institutions. These members currently form 8 Standing Councils that each elect a Chair to sit on the CDA National Council. Each Chair is charged with representing the needs and interests of his/her Council at the Board level.

Why should I join?

The CDA’s agenda is driven by its members.

Through our financial and human resources, we provide a platform for joint action towards the betterment of dance. Becoming a member of the CDA means having YOUR needs represented on a national level. Bring your voice to the table and join the national dance community in working towards making a difference for dance.

A strong representation of members means a strong case for dance.

Our community is small, which means we must work together in order to be heard. Every voice adds momentum to our efforts. Every single member makes a difference.

How much does it cost?

Individuals who are members of another dance service organization
can join the CDA for as little as $30*!

Full individual member rates range from $30 - $45. Organizational rates start at $70, and are based on annual operating budget. See our membership from for details.

*Special discounted rates are available to individual members who are already members of a dance service organization that is a member of the CDA.
