Nationally award-winning Joe Ink was formed in 1995 in response to the choreographic vision of Artistic Director Joe Laughlin. The company quickly built a reputation for creating provocative, witty and lyrical work. The company also encompasses the larger community through our intergenerational, community-building dance creation workshop, Move It!, designed for every body.
"My work is contextual and organic, a responsive approach to dance making that reflects my eclecticism, and that is expressed in the collaborative nature of much of my work. I?m concerned with notions of structure, be they physical, sociological, pedagogical, political, visible or invisible. How do we (or how do we not) fit into them? What is the emotional, physical & spiritual cost? This underlying thesis leads me to create work that is in direct response to specific individuals and to the situations that affect the various communities I inhabit. Through a deep understanding of dance, I combine elements of formal technique, media, athleticism, music and art, with the intention of expressing our shared humanity in a visceral and kinetic way". As an individual dance artist, I am
currently choreographing, presenting and producing my own work.
Supported by provincial and federal funding, the work is often
collaborative in nature and can encompass the visual and media arts in
addition to modern-based dance. Subject matter ranges widely from
comedic topics to more reflective moving sculpture. As an ‘independent’,
I hire dancers on a show to show basis. My objectives are to present a
unique voice from Atlantic Canada and to work with, and present, some of
the region’s finest dancers. In addition to performing and creating, I
also present creative movement and modern dance workshops to a variety
of students both in the school system and in the professional non-dance
world. I currently work out of the Halifax Dance Studios.
